Ranch H1

Corriente cattle can be traced back to the first cattle brought to the New World by Spanish Conquistadors as early as 1493. These cattle were hardy breeds chosen especially to withstand the ocean crossing and could survive in harsh climates with little food or water. Soon afterwards, they populated the mountains and canyons of Mexico, living as wildly as any animal left to nature. Attempts were made to breed for specific attributes for improvement, but in a short amount of time the breeders realized that they were targeting traits which were possessed initially by their wild Mexican ancestors. Like all good things, the cattle reverted back to their roots to succeed.

We noticed large differences between the Corrientes and traditional beef animals immediately. The Corrientes didn't want to spend time in the coolness of the shade in riparian areas or lay in the river. They climbed into impossible places in the rims and foraged plant species that hadn't been eaten or accessed by ordinary beef animals. They fiercely protected their calves against predators and didn't need assistance calving. We haven't had to pull a calf in twenty years.

The Corriente is the most athletic breed of cattle. They have proved to be excellent for rodeo for their small size and incredible speed. Our cattle are very docile, unless they are protecting their calves. We can walk into a field and scratch the appreciative necks of the majority of our breeding bulls. Corrientes possess a native intelligence that is better experienced than explained. We've enjoyed raising them immensely.
